  Just search for xmms recompiled in a Free Country (IE: Outside of the
USSA).  Not all countries recognize the patents in mp3.  The versions of
XMMS from old CD's has the MP3 code compiled in as well, and most people
believe that disabling MP3 playing in xmms was pure US politics (IE:  
their opposition to software patents) in the case of RedHat.
