It supports colors very nicely! 

The LaTeX color package 
(http://www.onid.orst.edu/~peterseb/tex/samples/color-package.html)

You could also use pstricks (http://www.tug.org/applications/PSTricks/) if you 
need fancier backgrounds with gradients and frames etc.
