what program are you using for burning??
if you are using cdrecord, open up /etc/cdrecord.conf and increase the
CDR_FIFOSIZE and decrease the speed.
In my box the settings are 8m and 24 respectively, and they work fine
:-)

PS: yesterday i burnt a 650 meg image at 40x - took 3 minutes 8 seconds
...cool :-D
