this is a good thread .. all members please contribute .. let's
generate traffic to get the super set of all goodies

BUT i feel this way :

- linux is a very techie subject too
- linux is a very simple OS too

so maybe we could approach this issue by having CD's based on 3
levels

level-0 - a cd with the smallest possible number of things ..
really small
level-1 - the standard ilug-cal CD .. with commonly accepted
components
level-2 - like the pro version of s/w .. lots of goodies packed
in .. for power users

normally level-1 CD would be handed over to normal members
members abs new to linux L-0 CD could initiate the un-initiated
L-2 CD's could be for the power users, the more adventurous.

So the job just now would be to get a reasonably good set of
sturdy and stable collection of items which would work FLAWLESSLY
across all h/w platforms without hanging up at all .. this would
be important .. the inclusions then would have to be viewed not
on parameters of familiarities and favourites .. but on SURE SHOT
working on all h/w (say from 386 upwards .. and maybe other
processorts like AMD, Cyrix too) .. i would say that members are
members .. each having legacy h/w or latest h/w .. to tie up in
the ilug-cal thread thru an ilug-cal CD .. the LCM/HCF concept of
maths would be a good model .. a collection that would surely
work on ALL h/w combos is very important
