Interesting posting below. I'd like to invite 'siliconic' to join the PRC list too... While this may be fun, it is pointless to do so. I feel one should change or upgrade only when your application or work demands it. The Free Software changes itself everyday. I was using Red Hat 6.2 upto last week and installed Mandrake 8.1 because now a particular software which I wanted needed rpm ver 3.0 onwards. although Redhat 8.0 and Mandrake 9.0 is available I do not need it as I am satisfied with Gnome 1.4 and the other stuff. Besides Mandrake 8.0 takes almost 3.5 GB (2 CD)complete install and I would like it if people started exchanging information about Free Software rather than GNU/Linux Distributions. The power of Free Software lies in exchanging code and reusing other people's code to make high quality software in the least possible time. I would be VERY VERY interested to know what the ILUG people are working on and if possible contribute to their projects. One of the projects I am involved with is called Octave (http://www.octave.org/). "GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language. " Also try this great RPG which comes along with Mandrake 8.1 (http://nethack.sourceforge.net/common/info.html#Basic) I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHAT DISTRIBUTION ARE YOU PEOPLE USING AND WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THAT PARTICULAR DISTRIBUTION ?? ALSO THE KINDS OF PROJECTS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. brickbats and bouquets welcome... siliconichighway ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ -- _____ _ _ _ | ___| __ ___ __| | ___ _ __(_) ___| | __ Freelance Journo, Goa India | |_ | '__/ _ \/ _` |/ _ \ '__| |/ __| |/ / http://linuxinindia.pitas.com | _|| | | __/ (_| | __/ | | | (__| < http://www.bytesforall.org |_| |_| \___|\__,_|\___|_| |_|\___|_|\_\ http://opennews.indianissues.org -- Frederick Noronha * Freelance Journalist * Goa * India 832.409490 / 409783 Writing with a difference... on what makes *the* difference Knowlege is power... share it equitably! _______________________________________________ prc mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.sarai.net/mailman/listinfo/prc -- Sayamindu Dasgupta [ http://www.peacefulaction.org/sayamindu/ ] ========================================= Speak out on social and cultural issues at PeacefulAction.Org http://www.peacefulaction.org ***************************************** If a listener nods his head when you're explaining your program, wake him up. -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
