On my RedHat 8.0, I need to press [Esc] *thrice* in quick succession or
[Tab] twice which gives the same output as you mentioned (1822
possibilities on my machine).

No, pressing "y" in my machine does display the possibilities page wise.
Which version of RedHat are you using? Have you used the [Tab]?
