Oh, no not THAT guy and his sound card again !
But wait, this is not a post to help me with something that does not work,
rather its a post asking for help with why something DOES work !

Well, I booted up the ol machine tonight, and like a man guided by forces
beyond his control, I logged into root on console, loaded
the sound module (insmod sound), logged into root on x, disabled roots
arts , logged out, logged in as user (in X) and hey, whaddya know,
sound works !

If I unload sound /sbin/rmmod sound, the apps still work, so there is some
other vital sound module that is loaded at bootup.

So I've given up understanding how THAT works tonight, I have the old
modules.conf file that I sent out earlier, I guess roots arts was hogging
the device on bootup....

oh, well I was reading that it takes 1 week to get sound working on RH8.0,
and I guess I just added to that statistic.

In linux everything works...eventually :)
