a particular address need not have a resolvable ip addresss as long as a machine on the net acts as a dns server and a mail exchange (NS / MX)
for the domain.

the dns server might be redirecting the MX record to the machine which actually acts as the server.

abc.com dns server might be hosted on say ns3.xyz.com
the MX of abc.com might be say mx.xyz.com

even though the specific domain might not have any ip address.

hope this clarifies.
