For the first time in the history of TUGIndia, we approach each one of
you for generous contribution to meet an impending expenditure
relating to the promotion of TeX in India. As you all know, TUG2003 is
being held at Hawai'i and three delegates from TUGIndia are slated to
represent India and make presentations in the conference. They are:

  * Ajit Ranade

  * Satish Babu

  * KG Kumar

All of them work in various aspects of TeX like technology -- present
and future directions, sociology and economics of TeX, techno-
entrepreneurial promotion of TeX, TeX as a medium of text processing
with futuristic technologies, etc. The participation of these
delegates aims at presenting the Indian scenario relating to the above
aspects to the world at large.

The collateral benefits expected for the Indian TeX community are the
networking with developers from different countries to solve problems
in TeX and friends faced by individual users and text processing
industry in India as well, talking to various publishers and potential
clients who happen to participate in the conference to see India as a
destination for TeX projects, find funding and/or outsourcing
assistance for proposed series of micro-enterprises based on TeX in
this country (the first such micro-enterprise would be launched by mid
April), etc.

However, we face acute monetary shortage to send these delegates. We
banked on the bursary assistance of TUG, unfortunately TUG is
helpless, as their bursary is so thin now. Also, the organizations to
which the delegates are affiliated are not related to TeX and as such,
they find no justification in funding these delegates.

Therefore, I would earnestly request each one of you to contribute to
the bursary fund of TUGIndia to enable us to assist the delegates to
participate in the conference. Any amount irrespective of its quantum
would be of great help to TUGIndia.

Cheques and DD's may be drawn favoring, The Indian TeX Users Group on
any bank in Trivandrum and forwarded to:

Information relating to potential contributors like text processing
companies, trusts or the like may kindly be posted to TUGIndia Board
at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, so that we can directly approach them for
funding assistance.

Your help will be much appreciated, please remember TeX in India needs
your assistance now.

Best regards

Radhakrishnan

Dear Dr. CVR

I feel bad looking at the fate of noble groups such as TUG. I shall
try my best to contribute to the cause.

In addition, I would suggest that we should approach publishing
companies for sponsorship. I just want to share my experience with
you. For the past 2 years I am writing a text book and I preferred
using TeX for that. However, my publisher does not know anything
about it. I went on to provide a two-three day training kind of
thing to two persons from that company and encouraged them to be a
part of TUG. They procured TeX Live 6 from you and have been using
it ever since. However, at the moment they are unable to transform
all of their projects into TeX because there are several authors who
prefer MS WORD kind of things. So, if we organize a meeting with all
the publishers and encourage them to use Tex for all of its benefits
vis-a-vis any other word processor, they would goad the authors to
use TeX. After all, no author should find it difficult to type a
.TEX file without a style file.

I feel that there should be a swarm of workshops of the kind Dr.
Kalidoss organized recently. These can be even a week long
training camps. And, the publishers should be willing to come forward
to sponsor these events. Please give a little bit of thinking on
these lines.

sincerely
Ramakalyan

I have some interest in this and had helped someone write up simple swara
patterns in different tempos in LaTeX in english using srgmpdn; it was
nothing much except I used underlining once, twice, thrice etc to indicate
the tempo of the pattern and dots to indicate different octaves. In that
connection I had thought about notation in carnatic music and looked into
sangitha sampradaya pradarshini where a notation for gamakas is attempted.
`TeX and friends' is eminently suited to this kind of a job.

I would be interested in doing something in this direction especially
since my other interest is TeX / LaTeX for Indian languages. I reside in
Bangalore and if you happen to stay close we could meet and discuss.

I looked at the above and imitated a small sample in LaTeX; please see the
attached ps file (as the file was small I took the liberty of attaching
with this mail. Sorry for any inconvenience to the listers). It was done
just as I was writing this mail and has some errors, mainly of alignment;
it was done just to show that it is possible.

Thank you very much for your kindness.

That is a laudable quality which all the other academics should
emulate.

They should have joined the list, because they would benefit with
instantaneous solutions for problems like the one you list below.

ARK> They procured TeX Live 6 from you and have been using it ever

That is not a big deal now. There are several word to TeX translators
among which I have found one written by a Professor of an Ukranian
University very good. It costs just $35, I would prefer to pay him the
money for the great job he has done. Further, all the subsequent
releases are free too.

ARK> So, if we organize a meeting with all the publishers and

Sure, we will discuss in the TUGIndia Board about the possibilities.
Suppose, if we organize something like this in Chennai or Bangalore,
will you spare one or two days for the workshop? All your travel and
boarding will be met by TUGIndia.

ARK> After all, no author should find it difficult to type a .TEX
ARK> file without a style file.

ARK> I feel that there should be a swarm of workshops of the kind
    ARK> Dr. Kalidoss organized recently.

Yes. There is one being organized at Pune during mid June. Similar
plans are there for other parts of the country.

ARK> These can be even a week long training camps. And, the
ARK> publishers should be willing to come forward to sponsor these

Sure, we would thankfully take note of the above suggestions and will
try to implement as soon as possible.

Best regards.

Radhakrishnan
