Respected members, After proposing Audio/Video archival mechanisms, I came to know that iLUG will be provided with a camcoder approx. about December thanks to yet another genial gentelman.
However, for the time being, restricted to voice recordings I can suggest: We use a speech compression codec (NOT a audio compression codec like Ogg). which is BETTER suited to compressing HUMAN speech. By estimates, PCM Audio will consume 700MB for 80 Mins, which compressed with Ogg @64Kbps will come down at 60MB (It would have compressed to 35MB with MP3Pro..). However, using a speech compression coec, we can easily fit a 80 Mins speech into 25 MB ! The speech codec that I currently have in mind is "Speex". It's a patent, royalty free SPEECH codec, and the counterpart of Ogg Vorbis in speech compression technology. Voice can be easily recorded using many methods... Currently we can plug in a condensor mic into the computer soundcard, and run a sound capture program like "KRec" and compress the resulting PCM file(~650MB) using "Speex" to get ~25 MB file. We can later feed the sound file into the very good "Open Mind Speech" software, which is part of the Open Mind Initiative and aims to develop free (GPL) speech recognition. Thus we also would be able to have a automatically generated transcript of the meeting too ! Hope you people like this idea ! (I always seem to be full of such ideas ;) ) Suggestions to better speech codecs ,etc welcome Regards Subhobroto Sinha __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
