there are various opensource/free s/w tools available which lend themselves to 
the task exceedingly well -- mondo/mindi, mkcdrec and mirrordir. each has 
their invidual strong points and relative weaknesses.

IMO if u want a mult-CD spanning backup set u should look at mkcdrec. whereas 
if u have a second HDD available using mirrordir via a anacron/cron job is 
excellent.

If u face any difficulty while setting up any of these, let me know... with 
guide u thru.
