You don't have to reinstall windows. Create boot floppies first from your windows. Then try installing lilo or grub. If that fails then you can always boot with the floppies to windows and reinstate the mbr. For Windows 98 it is fdisk /mbr
For Win2K/XP it is fixmbr
For you dias problem boot into Linux and send the output of the following commands
ifconfig -a (u have to be root) route -n

True, but I am apprehensive of the the possibility of corupting the windows boot process .. It would be terrible if I have to reinstall windows..
