managing a switch is different than using as a switch. you can always 
telnet into a switch from a linux box and configure its OS to manage it. 
you can use SNMP also. even a switch's OS can be based on linux.  i don't 
have any idea of using a computer as a layer 2 device. it would be nice to 
have some on the list.
