hmmm...
reminds me of a article at NewsForge

Siemens has no "religious" attachment to a particular distro or desktop
environment. Before settling on Ximian, Siemens evaluated plain vanilla
Gnome and KDE as well. Siemens found KDE to be more "Windows-like" than
Gnome, but that led to problems when non-technical users expected a more
Windows-like experience. Gnome, particularly Ximian's version, was
"different enough" to set user expectations that the experience would be
less like Windows, which led to fewer adoption problems.

I don't use KDE, so I can't comment on the KDE vs. GNOME thingy, but I
have a feeling that the GNOME developers try to move away from the
traditional Windows like look and feel (spatial file navigation, path
bar in file selectors, lack of text entry in "Open File" dialog boxes).
But, that only makes it more Mac like ;-)
However, functionality wise, we may see some very interesting things
soon in the Free Desktop(s) - and AFAIK, these features are not
available atm in either Mac OS or in 'doze.

Take a look at Dashboard (http://www.nat.org/dashboard/), or at Storage
(http://www.gnome.org/~seth/storage/) for examples.

Of course, Longhorn may change all that ;-)

-cheers-
