I used to use wvdial for the purpose, but started having problems lately. Wvdial connects sends in the Username and password, but then there seems to be no response from the other side and wvdial fails. Says: Don't know what to do, starting pppd and hoping for the best. Of course without ppp negotiations, pppd fails.
I'm presently using gkdial, but it doesn't allow me to enter in additional modem strings. Consequently i can't use my new modem (D-Link ext. 56k), since i need to pass in ATX3 to tell it to dial without waiting for dialtone. So i'm stuck here with my old modem. On a related note, can somebody give me any pointers on where pon/poff stores the init strings,etc. for modems ?
