Hmmm,

I've written a program called Research Assistant
see http://r-a.sf.net for details.

It uses MySQL as its database backend.

The code was written on windows and runs stably there. Technically its
completely portable to linux since it uses QT, but it needs a few tweaks
and a makefile.

Right now, I'm too busy to even do this, but if some one wants to take a
shot, the code is in CVS (no tarballs yet :( )
