To disable sendmail from startup use
chkconfig sendmail off.
You can use the switch --level for disabling it ofr particular levels.

For my fedora core2 If I just wait for long enough sometimes as much as
10 minutes............... the 'halt' in the system stops and this
happens whenever there isn't proper net connection to the linux box , if
the net connection is proper then there is no prob

This is a common problem with RH sendmail based
systems. This means that your reverse DNS for your
system is not configured properly. As a workaround you
can try renaming /etc/resolv.conf to something else
and this should solve your problem. But, then you need
/etc/resolv.conf, if you surf the net.
So, to remove sendmail from startup, use chkconfig.

"man chkconfig" should help you out here.
