IBM notebooks are the most sturdy and reliant. If your budget is less you can get an IBM R40e, which is a good enough one. IBM recently cut it's prices by a lot. I got it in January with 2.0 GHz Celeron, 256 MB RAM and a 20 GB HDD. I run Debian with reiserfs on it and am pretty satisfied with it. I run 4 instances of Apache (one with Java), mysql, fax, mysql, and do a lot of compilations on it. It works pretty well for me, though I prefer running Java on a Desktop with 512 MB RAM.
