create root and swap partitions, format them, mount your intended root partition, copy the root dir '/' to that partition keeping device files under '/dev' as they are (otherwise have a catastrophe), tweak the copied '/etc/fstab', and do the equivalent of editing copied '/etc/lilo.conf' and the command 'lilo -r <new root>' with grub (i don't know). in my opinion this method might work in installing suse9.1 livecd.
