i too had this problem .
i solved it this way.

1) if u have made an Emergency Boot Disk (EBD) {you should have :-) } - floppy during install you can boot from that.
2) else use any linux LiveCD or RescueCD to boot and mount the linux root partition in /mnt or
somewhere and do a # chroot (mounted linux root directory).
that and create/edit the /etc/lilo.conf file to proper format (lookup #man lilo.conf ).
don't forget to add :


other
optional
/dev/hdX (X being the winXP partition)
table=/dev/hdX

then simply run /sbin/lilo -v  and reboot . Viola!

I know lilo only - ask somebody else about grub ,but that must be almost same.
