Try koffice. It is bit down in functinality but way faster than OpenOffice.org. 
Alternatively you can use the combination of Abiword and Gnumeric if you can forgoe 
the presentation part.

p.s. Slackware 9.0 runs quite fast in my 350 Mhz PII with 128 MB RAM. Off course it 
has an AGP card with 4MB RAM.
