OK - I finally managed to get it to work.
I enabled the debug options in my kernel, and from the debug messages, I
managed to figure out that my USB controller[1] was refusing to go into
suspend mode for some reasons.
So I simply (re)compiled in the USB drivers as modules, and wrote a
simple script that unloads the USB modules before I go into suspend to
RAM state.
Apart from the USB controller - every other piece of hardware suspended
flawlessly - including the wifi card (which, to be very frank - I did
not expect to be "suspendable" like that).
