I had been following this thread from a long time and
would beg to difer from the opinion of some of the
list members. I work as a programmer for a living.
Like most (all ??) programmers I was taught c/c++/java
on windows and still that has'nt stopped me from
making a living out of coding in linux. The point is
that the languages being taught in school curricullum
should be *fairly* generic languages through which the
students can learn *how to write code* and NOT how to
write code in that particular language. There is a
subtle yet significant difference between the two.
C/C++ might be a nightmare to maintain, but are easy
enough for students to follow and thus, take their
first steps into computer programming. Infact,
according to me students should be taught programming
concepts by starting with a language like basic,
moving on to pascal and/or C and then, when they're
ready for it, C++ or Java/C#. More than the choice of
the language, its the concepts which are more
important to learn.
Coming back to the linux scenario, I think something
like gambas would be an ideal candidate to teach kids
how to program computer and then moving on to
glade/QTDesigner to teach them more about
controls/widgets etc. C/C++ are indespensible teaching
aids because of the relatively less number of
constructs, functions etc present in these languages.
So the programmer can concentrate on the program logic
only and not get intimidated by the hundereds of
functions/APIs present at his descretion. Anyone
starting with java/c# programming can relate to what
I'm saying here.
