Hello everybody,
Please send me your emails, which you used for ubuntu CD from
shipit.ubuntu offlist. After mailing him a lot he mailed me to send
him those email-ids for despatching CDs them first just for the
ILUG-CAL's COMPASS event. He also informed that there are about
100,000 orders in their database. So sending the emails will help
them for quick delivery.
Hold your horses for a moment. There has not been any decision regarding
distribution of the cds at Compass. Let's not burden the people at
Canonical. Besides, IMHO it's not good for the image of ilug-cal, if
we're giving away cds just like that. People will just come to collect
the "free cd" and leave, and later use them as coasters. I don't think
that'll give us necessary mileage or be useful for the promotion of
Linux.
As far my experience in BF, there are a lot of peoples are available
who want to give it a try. They faced many virus attacks, and feel
that they are using OS+Softwares piracy. Some peoples are attracted by
the file access security feature. All are normal users, who use some
text processing, Internet surfing, Listen songs, watch movies etc.
They want to shift to Linux if they have it. Some professional people
(one from some television channel) tested GIMP and satisfied with it.
If we demonstrate Linux among 5-7 people, then 2-3 are interested for
using it, which I think good. Now about free CDs, and I agreed with
you that free CDs can be used as coasters. But if we do it, they can
use it soon, and compare with other OSs. Once they feel the security,
sound, video, games (this may be a factro), and virus immune feature,
may be from the very next day they will completely shift to it. We got
a huge response in BF, there are some false alarm also, but still the
response is good. Distributing original CDs rather than burning CDs
will be good. Many peoples are ready to pay (burning charge+CD cost)
on the BF, if we arrange the burning there.
What about ILUG-CAL's fund. If we start to donate, then I think the
stall fair can be handled. We can also go for sponsors, at the BF
there are a lot of crowd in Linux PCs and almost everyone is
interested for using it.
We are not a formal body yet. So we can't handle money.
Yes, still now we exist only on Internet, which is normal for a user
group. Infact I dont know anything about that, I want to say what
about COMPASS event? Will we be there? The stall fare is toooo high as
you all told. So I say that users like me and my friends (all are
students) can contribute for ILUG-CAL's COMPASS stall, it may be
nothing regarding the stall fare. But we all believe "bindu bindu diye
Sindhy toiri hoi". So, if required we can donate and go for
sponsorship collection.
What is the big problem in registering ilug? People playing carroms on
footpaths get themselves registered.
Ok, I should mail to Ubuntu to stop the shipping now, untill our
COMPASS is final.
Why?
Ending with the hope that we will be in COMPASS, if it is not yet
finalized.
The probability that we will be there is 0.93.
