I too faced the same problem when I upgraded to kernel 2.6.10 for
AMD64(Athlon) on my Debian, this kernel? does not recognise vesa. I
cross checked with my Ubuntu install which also uses 2.6.10. I found
Ubuntu is using xorg instead of xfree86, and they have used the generic
AMD kernel (supports both AMD and intel). I did not find time to
investigate further.
