I had this problem when I tinkered with the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
I had tried to add the ubuntu repositories into the debian sarge
repository list hoping that I could get the 64bit programs. That let to
total chaos in the apt system and apt started complaining about memory
shortage. I then manually weeded out all the ubuntu entries and some
others I had put in and also wiped out the /var/apt/cache/archives with
apt-get clean. After few trials, I got it going again.
