U compile it on your own system and that should give best performance. That's what I know. May be wrong also. But the best part is that people get an idea how to recompile kernel. And when that task has a meaning, like getting access to the windows partition on your own system, it much more fun to learn. Doing it just for the sake of doing it can just become boring.
