It is possible to use it for a wide variety of applications including for automated translations. The theory for which is well-developed. Theoretically it is possible to do Bangla translations as well. But I don't know about packages for it. At ubuntu they use it for translating documentation. There are some people at iitk working on related projects...with shareable databases (Indian languages).
