Well,
i've heard this problem with BSNL before, off the list. try opera, maybe that
could work.
about this problem in colleges, i've had the oppertunity see things in fast
hand. it's an amazing stuation. people install windows, get a virus, format,
reinstall, get a virus and the cycle continues. in colleges this cycle is of a
very small duration. but thinking logically this doesn't seem to be that
strange. it's simple, they don't know the correct alternatives to
pirated/propereitary s/w. it's what they've been brought up with and taught. so
this cycle will continue through generations to come.
so there is a question that we have to ask ourselves. what are we planning to
do about it? well, go ahead and sue BSNL (i'm not speaking from a legal point
of view, i'm a s/w engineer). but would you also sue your college, or all
colleges over this city/state/country? i think the issue here is awareness of
the policy makers. we're planning to bring the LUG to campuses. i recommend,
and i've been thinking about this for a long time, talking and educating the
policy makers (principals, faculty members) about the benefits necessary. and
remember, we will also have to prove that the job they do can be done better on
GNU/Linux and FLOSS tools. unless we can do that it will never change.
so i am calling out to all LUG members, are you listening? let's talk to the
faculty of the colleges. they plant the seed of knowledge in students, and it's
them that we have to convince. the students will automatically follow the way.
i recommend seminars, workshops etc. i'll speak to people at my college
(Rajabazar Science College, Radiophysics dept). they use GNU/Linux a lot
already. maybe they'll help us with contacts, venue etc. don't expect anything
very big yet. but before that i've got to know that you people will be with me
all the way. i'm counting on you guys :-).
