(Sorry for lengthy mail .)
Kindly vivek let us not take this opportunity to engage in soshta & popular
bengal
bashing - it is a moment of grief and introspect for this LUG .
also there's no reason to be cynical about " lal-selam " (red-salute) - the
term was
coined from the red flag used in the workers unrest in hay market in chicago
USA
in 1886 ( it was reddened with blood ) and subsequently taken up by the
great
october revolution which gave birth to USSR - the details are foggy for me
but u
can read up all about in the history and sociology books . I have great
respect for
the heroic people who died in bringing social/political/economic justice to
all and
never use the term in such trivial manner .
A "strike" ( bandh or hartal or dhormoghot ) is a naval terminology arising
from the
fact that it was common in the days of sailing merchant/naval vessels that
the crew
when dissatisfied beyond a certain point used to abandon the ship at a
foreign port
- before going ashore they used to "strike the mast" ( meaning - to pull
down the
main-sail and it's entire ropes and buntings ) .
Bengali's had no part to play in either - as far as i recall .
We are proud however to use the former term symbolically to denote the voice
of protest against sociopolitical injustice and to pay respect as said .
Some people
are allergic to all forms of protests - however - understandably - they
consider it
as unproductive ,hurts their poor wallets he he .
- Pinaki .
