hi all,
octave and scilab are alternatives for matlab.
and for the regular lab works, octave would be sufficient.

but both tools are no where near matlab from the perspective of an engineer
or mathematician.
and linux version of matlab is available. (information for those who have a
dual boot system for the sake of matlab).
