Hi,
  I wasn't expecting that answer :) ! I really had a glimmer of hope
when you mentioned Herb - about an industrial class VLSI design entry
app. Electric is actually one such app. It is copyrighted by Sun
microsystems & Static Free Software. It is also directly affiliated to
FSF. Sun has an entire development team employed for it. The system
can be used for VLSI design entry through schematic layout, or HDLs
(VHDL or Verilog). It can even convert between design units (HDL to
layout and back)! It is also able to do simulations (haven't figured
out yet how that is done).

All this really paints a rosy picture of Free VLSI design tools. But
when you look at the Opencores site (site for developing 'free' IP
cores), you really get a picture of the state of affairs:

Thats why I was so interested in this post. Anyways, I hope that the
situation will change soon. I am looking forward to the app that will
become the gimp of VLSI tools. So please do keep me posted if you
'stumble upon' new information like this in the future ;-). And,
thanks for this news (on Herb) too. I will be keeping a tab on this
project from now on.

Regards,
Gokul Das
