Check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
In the "Screen" section, locate the subsection "Display". Inside, see if
you've a line which goes like:
Modes      "1024x768" "800x600"

If you don't have such a line, add one with the resolution you think is OK
for your monitor. For 15"-17" monitors, 1024x768 must be sufficient.
i.e.
Modes     "1024x768"
