What version of KDE are you using? KDE's own compositing effects are not
as matured as compiz and does not offer such a large number of effects.
Compiz can be use as the winow manager of KDE. I had done that in KDE 3
(there used to be a setting somewhere.. it's been a while since 3.x!).
I'm using KDE 4.2, and tried switching to Compiz window manager from
System Settings > Default Applications > Window Manager
Even after after logging in again, I found it problematic, because the
window decorations and title bar were missing. The compiz effects seemed
to be working fine. I switched back to KWin.

If you're using KDE 4, I'd recommend using KDE's own KWin's compositing
effects. It's not as cool or smooth as compiz, but not too bad either.
