> It is written more on ubuntu. Why concentrate on one distro.

I think we are teaching them to use computers and programs and not
distros. Keeping in mind the fact that Ubuntu is _the_ most popular
OS, why not Ubuntu ? This blind hatred for Ubuntu/Windows/X-Distro is
kind of stupid. It is immaterial what distro is used to teach the
syllabus . It should be designed to be applicable across distros. If
at all we have to make a choice on distros, we can use i...@school,
since we can find teachers with experience on it to help us.

I think the points to keep in mind is

* By the time kids finish the syllabus, they should be able to create
presentations/documents, edit an image using GIMP if they have to,
surf the internet, create text files, play music and movies, find
things on internet for themselves, use text/audio/video chat , use
emails for communication, know what is there on the internet
(websites, forums, social networking) and to make intelligent decision
about things they see on internet. A little insight into how all this
came about, what FOSS is and why they should care about it also
should be taught. We are trying to educate children to use computers
as tools to accomplish things in life. I think Sunil sir was trying to
point out exactly that.

* Programming languages should be taught entirely optionally., perhaps
in 8th standard. teach what programming languages can do for them. If
we do that , the ones who want to learn it will learn no matter what.
If at all they are taught, it shouldnt count towards credits at the
end of the term.

* Administering a computer and things like installing software and
networking are important. But let the kids figure out how to do it and
help them if we have to. We should be teaching them about how to find
out things like that .

Ashik S
