Hi, I have the problem solved, albeit partially. On May 9, 12:29 pm, Syam Krishnan <sya...@gmail.com> wrote: > In Fedora, in the 'Network configuration' utility, you can set a static > IP for an interface, and then deselect the 'Controlled by > NetworkManager' option.
Thanks for the very valuable info ശ്യാം ചേട്ടാ. I was able to identify the 'Network configuration' as 'system-config- network' [ http://fedoramobile.org/Members/MrHappy/system-config-network ]. Unfortunately, it isn't available even on Ubuntu repository. Besides, the page itself says, "NetworkManager and system-config- network do not handle support for static IP addressing very well. Better support of static IP addresses is planned and in-progress for NetworkManager in the future". So, I guess I will have to wait more. All the while, I was trying to rename the 'Auto eth1' connection and set its method from DHCP to manual. Seems that this is not enough- you have to 'Add' a new connection and 'copy-paste' the MAC address to it. This was exactly what പ്രസാദ് ചേട്ടന് was suggesting earlier -but I never even guessed that the problem was in the way of editing connections. It may be a problem with the way NM chooses the default profile. That however doesn't solve my problems completely. NM assigns the Static IP only after someone has logged in locally (this wasn't the case with NM 0.6). On the other hand, I need static IP for remote SSH login, possibly with no one locally logged in. So it seems that the only option left to me is to deactivate NM for now and use text configuration- until they fix it. Meanwhile, I will give WICD a try and see if it fits my need.
