if you have an internet connection then try to download form repository
(using  apt-get or synaptic)

follow these procedures

You need to check that a "universe" mirror is listed in your
/etc/apt/sources.list.

then go to terminal and then type as follows

% sudo apt-get update
% sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

This will complete the installation

("mozilla-plugin-vlc" is optional)


If you want to open VLC You need to go to Applications—>Sound&Video—>VLC
Media Player
