hi,

In Ubuntu 9.04, the desktop icons are hidden by default.

Press Alt + F2 and type gconf-editor in the dialog box and Click Run to
start the GNOME Configuration Editor.
Now you need to Go to the apps/nautilus/desktop from left menu and On the
right hand side,you need to check the following options
trash_icon_visible
computer_icon_visible
home_icon_visible

also you can try 'Ubuntu Tweak' to show the icons, if you dont want to mess
with the above stuff.
