Microsoft has a tread to provide freeware/open source for the benefit of
education .
Microscope Telescope is a good example of such initiative which cost them
equivalent/more to proprietary software such as M$ small business
accounting.

By giving them freeware/open Microsoft try to attract students towards a
Windows based machine. Although it benefits public their business intention
is clear.
