Gnewsense has been my Main OS for about two years now. Gnewsense is just a cleaned ubuntu; what it does is to relay the very same ubuntu packages on main and universe sections, removing the non-free packages and neglecting every other sections(multiverse non-free etc).. The problem of not having vlc and mplayer is couples from ubuntu, that they have these things included in the multiverse. A community repository is being setup for gnewsense, which is supposed to be including all these free-but-in-non-free-section programs. Anyway At the moment, vlc sources are in the repo, you can compile it;-). > last 36 hours i'm trying to ply amr and 3gp files. > a lot of library is missing. Well the problem with the codecs in general is different, afaik we have free software for all these but patents prohibit use of that in some part of the world. So as in ubuntu, gNS cd also don't have these codecs, but as soon as you click a mp3 or avi(or anything) it allows you to install the gstreamer codecs from the repo. But IIRC 3gp's audio codec amr has another problem, its code so far isn't even fully free as in the code for 3gp lib doesn't allow you to modify. Last time i checked some one is working on rewriting it to make it free. > i think the reason is, it has less number of pre-installed drivers. Its just that it removes non-free stuffs nothing more nothing less. If you have any hardwares not working, you should certainly try fresh kernel debs from http://www.aligunduz.org/gNewSense Those are tested to be working with current versions(well i too use it regularly and see no problems) Happy Hacking Shyam K --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ "Freedom is the only law".
