Try to configure the X manually......
Get into the terminal mode ( alt+ctrl+F1)
stop gdm sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
Reconfigure X sudo Xorg -configure
A new xorg file xorg.conf.new will be created in the home folder.
Backup the current xorg.conf file: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup1
Copy the new xorg file to the required position.
sudo cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Try this and reply if worked.........
