There is a critical difference - its called vision. Ubuntu lacks that
vision to create something new. By that, I do not reduce the fact that
Ubuntu was able to gain so much mindshare in recent years, but I
cannot see any technical reasons for that.

Pardus has differences from distros in all these, it is true.

But, there is a more important one - a vision to create a better
desktop environment (and by that it doesnt mean make clones of Compiz
or Mac OS X Dock).

Nowadays, Kubuntu seems to be taking more and more from Pardus.

Take for e.g. the package manager itself - its not a bunch of
undocumented and non-understandable shell scripts and programs.
Accepted that it is not as old and therefore robust as say deb/apt or
rpm/blah, but the features they are able to add to it in such a short
time is a testament to their vision.

The packaging system is well integrated. Unlike deb/apt, in pisi the
packages and the delivery system are totally integrated. Also the pisi
packaging system is able to adapt to a variety of working styles - it
is both similiar to gentoo and similiar to deb+apt. The package
"sources" are extremely easy to understand ... by default you need an
XML file that describes where you get the source and what components
are in a particular software, and a simple python script that
describes how to build it. Typically, the python script is just
boilerplate (maybe 10 lines including whitespace), which you can
mostly copy from other packages. Compared to this, generating a deb
package is a real PITA.

There are similiar aspects to all their systems, including
configuration, device detection, init system, installer, etc.

I would say that Pardus is turning out to be the premier KDE distro.
