I had a similar problem using the liveusb-creator on Fedora 11. There 
was an issue specific to the version that I was using, due to which the 
boot record was not being written properly. I think patches are 
available for this issue (Some people recommend using older versions of 
liveusb-creator).

Also, I was able to create working bootable USB disks using the Windows 
version of liveusb-creator.
