great to hear that you managed to install linux can you just give the hardware config your system especuiall abt your network card, Sound card and the display card. maybe there is some sort of hardware compatability problems as i said earlier i had no problems with kubuntu although i haven't tried playing files in mplayer, i used kaffiene and amarok.
