About GNU/Linux.

We use Linux Kernel (majority of Free Software Users)

Operating System = Applications + Kernel
>

GNU is a project [Founder Richard Matthew Stallman] which was started in
1984 for creating a Full Free Software system which is compatible with Unix.
And they were successful in creating softwares like compilers, debuggers,
text editors and many more. But even after a long time GNU was unable to
create a Kernel. And by that time around 1991, Linux Kernel came into
existence and people started a using a combination of GNU Applications and
the Linux Kernel. (As such the kernel cannot do anything, a Kernel is just a
manager of resources.)

And right now many of us use the combination of GNU Applications and Linux
Kernel resulting in a GNU/Linux Operating System.

GNU project started the creation of HURD which is a Micro Kernel. HURD(under
development) is not very stable and thus cannot be used in a production
environment. And Linux is a Monolithic Kernel which was developed by Linus
Torvalds a Finnish Student.

Then we have more kernels like OpenSolaris, BSD etc.
