Do you want to see your ubuntu in malayalam? Or just want to type in malayalam? If the choice is second one, iBus is default installed in Karmic. System>Prefrences>IBus Prefrences then from 'Input Method' tab, select & add Malayalam (I prefer 'Mozhi'). If you need identifying the equivalent characters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Malayalam might help you.
