As I understand it, the basic difference between Free Software and Open
Source Software is that the former emphasizes the aspect of freedom
while the latter emphasizes the open nature of the software and the
quality that ensues from the development paradigm. This leads to
differences in stance on various issues. For instance, on the issue of
Tivo, FSF believes that the company is cheating the public when it says
that the software used is GPLed because the software will not run if
anyone modifies it, thus essentially making the licence meaningless. But
the OSS camp believes that that is the freedom of the manufacturer. Our
concern is the freedom of the users. (You can find plenty of material if
you google for tivo, in case you don't know about the issue.)
