hi i've used both ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10. and i find karmic to be more stabler over jaunty. since i don't use dsl based connections i can't comment on the problem you have mentioned. i use wifi at my workplace to connect to the internet. i also have reliance netconnect broadband connection as well, that too work perfectly out of the box in karmic using gnome network manager applet. maybe an update will fix your problem.
