Free Software/Open Source Software is free as in free speech and not free as
in free beer. But it doesn't restrict you from distributing the software
free, as in free beer, but free as in free speech is mandatory. Open
Source/Free Software refer to the license of a software.

Please check the license of the software given to the schools. If the
license falls under Free Software licenses [
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html], you can check the repository
for the code, or else ask the distributor to give you the code.

It is necessary that you give the source code for a Free Software, but not
always necessary that it should come on the same disk in which the software
came. You can always obtain the source code from the distributor for no
extra cost.
