>whatever why u do uninstall gnome? is it possible for a lay man

It is possible. In Debian default Desktop Environment is Gnome. When I
installed xfce, I did apt-get autoremove and it removed the packages
automatically installed.

>How exactly were you connecting while you had gnome?
I just clicked on nm-applet's "auto eth0"
But I reinstalled network-manager-gnome and the problem persists.
So it cant be the cause of the problem.

>How are you connecting now?
sudo ifconfig eth0 down
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient

I tried using the network-manager-gnome.

>Is the problem only after 2pm?
Yes. Other times it is fine. In Windows I can get speeds up to 500kbps.In
linux a few KBs. I tried split downloads with "axel" but still only
speeds up to
30Kbps. I think there is some mechanism to balance loads for Asianet after
2am. But the funny thing is in Windows, there is no problem.

>Try out wicd
wicd had issues detecting some of my wireless networks. So I am not using
it.
